---------------------------- Interview -------------------------

Q: Could you please provide a brief history of your company and the type of services you offer?

We are a Photo Editor/Commercial Photographer duo who combined forces as A Guy + A Girl Photography to photograph weddings for inspiring, creatively unique couples in New York and Los Angeles. The brides and grooms we work with have an appreciation for modern simplicity and natural beauty...and like to have fun.

Q: How did A Guy + A Girl Photography come to be?

Michael has been a commercial photographer for over 15 years, specializing in celebrity portraits + ad campaigns. I was a Photo Editor at Women's Health Magazine where a colleague had commissioned Michael for a story. We met in a cubicle and started shooting together within a year. Today, we photograph weddings + portraits for creative couples + fun families in both of our hometowns, NYC and LA.

Q: The two of you make a living capturing the magic of other people’s special day, how do you plan on photographing your own wedding?

In terms of photography (and everything else on the wedding day), we plan to do exactly what we recommend to the couples we work with -- relax, have fun...and go with the flow.

Q: The theme of your photography is very candid. Lots of natural lighting, unique angles and attention to intricate details. How does your wedding invitation design tie into your photographic style?

The most important concept to us through the entire wedding planning process was to keep it fun + light-hearted. That is who we are and a strong aspect in our photography. Weddings are happy days and we photograph each one with that in mind.

Q: Does the pastel, watercolor scheme of your invitations carry over to your wedding palette?

In a way, yes-- our palette is mostly soft, muted green (as in fern leaves) and blush. Understated and natural.

Q: We see many wedding invitations that are more traditional style, lots of script font, foiling and lots of information. Your designs refreshingly rely on the illustrations to get the point across. What inspired this design and what did you hope the style of the invitations to say about the two of you?

In our work and our personal lives, having a sense of humor is key. We wanted to express a playful sweetness in our invites. Our designer, Karen Lee (karenleedesign.com) had the idea to incorporate a personal aspect of our wedding day into the invite design (hence the warehouse-style venue as the invite focus) and immediately thought of illustrator, Traci Page (pagetraci.com) as the perfect person to bring this to life! Traci thought of so many smart, quirky ideas for every piece of the invitation suite-- like the love note in a bottle (in the east river) on the map, a NYC yellow cab w/tin cans on strings and the little picnic ant on the map near central park.

Karen + Traci worked together throughout the process, making sure they were on the same page and keeping the final product in mind. Karen's design skills really push the limits and bring a freshness to the idea of what a wedding is "supposed to be". We actually photographed Karen+ her husband, Steve's wedding at a farm in upstate NY a few years ago which Karen conceptualized, designed + coordinated, herself...including her beautiful, custom-branded box-invitation, which you can see here.

Q: Was forgoing foiling/finishing options a deliberate one?

Yes. While we love, respect and are completely fascinated by all different types of weddings, large + small, rustic + modern glam, etc, our style is a bit more casual. Our venue is ornate, in a distressed way but its plenty interesting on its own. Our wedding day will be informal and fun without a ton of "extras" and embellishment.

Q: Our Aquarelle paper is steadily getting more and more popular these days. What drew you to this paper stock?

It was chosen for us by Karen Lee (karenleedesign.com). She thought that it was reminiscent of watercolor paper. We trusted Karen on every design decision; not only does she have incredible taste but has also designed ground-breaking projects like the first plus-sized model ad campaign to appear in Sports Illustrated. Karen is actually the person who introduced us to Morning Print! (Note from Interviewer: Thank you Karen!)

Q: What is your advice for people wanting unique wedding invitations such as yours?

Firstly, choose an illustrator/designer who understand your personalities and style. Discuss one special idea to convey to your illustrator/designer...and then be open to their ideas. If you work with people you trust, you can let them be creative. For an amazingly personalized, unique experience, we recommend contacting Traci Page (pagetraci.com) and Karen Lee (karenleedesign.com) as your wedding invite art + design team!

Great experience and fast delivery! We also used morning print for our save the dates at the beginning of the year.

Q: Any other thoughts/information you’d like people to know about A Guy + A Girl Photography?

We always find it interesting that so many of the couples who contact us about wedding photography are a lot like us - creative + quirky with a light-hearted approach to what a modern wedding is. Every wedding we photograph is an opportunity to explore a new world of people and relationships and places. Michael and I consider it an honor each time a couple allows us into their world for a day and gives us the chance to tell their unique love story...and of course, we strongly believe that a compassionate sense of humor is the key to a happy marriage and a happy life.
