----------------- Interview -----------------

Q: Please briefly tell us about your company/services.

I am a freelance graphic designer offering logo and branding services. Most of my clients are startup, small or medium-sized businesses with whom I work with to establish the foundations of their brand and develop it through marketing and supporting collateral.

Q: What design goals did you and Adrian (owner of Wild & Whimsical Things) set for this project?

We wanted to create an identity that was playful, imaginative and whimsical. Wild & Whimsical Things is a boutique online store offering purposefully selected, quality products to encourage a child’s play, imagination and movement and we wanted the brand to reflect this.

Q: What were some of the references/influences for the design of the business card?

Playful, fun, inquisitive, whimsy

Q: The “WILD” in the crown of the logo feels like a direct nod to Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.  Was this deliberate and if so, how would you say his works tie into the products of Wild & Whimsical Things?

The style of
Where the Wild Things Are was a definite inspiration for this project, as it reflected the whimsical and imaginative nature of children, which describes the product range that Wild & Whimsical Things offers.

Q: What attracted you and Adrian to our Heavy Silky Matte cards?

The Heavy Silky Matte stock was selected for its durability, colour reproduction and most importantly, to feature the foiling treatment used for the logo mark.

Q: Why was Glossy Gold chosen for the foiling as opposed to Black Foil or Silver Foil?

The Gold Foil was selected to give a warm contrast with the mint colour we incorporated into the illustrations.

Q: How would you describe your personal design style/aesthetic?

Minimalist - with a focus on typography and use of strong elements. I do like to play with different techniques or styles.

Q: If someone called you tomorrow looking for a logo, describe what your process is for seeing a project from start to finish.

I initially get a good understanding of the business, what they do and where they see they want to position themselves. From there I begin design research and concept development. This can take some time, developing many concepts before presenting a small selection to the client who may incorporate some refinements. I like to present my logo concepts in context so they can visual the brand and application ‘outside’ of the logo itself.

Q: Over the span of your career, what methods for finishing projects quickly and efficiently have you found to work best?

Always get a clear brief and understanding on the client’s requirements and brand intention upfront. Understanding the client’s direction and expectation is paramount before commencing concepts as this provides a clear direction in guiding and navigating the process through to the final design product.

Q: What genre of design would you say you are most influenced by? Who is your favorite artist/designer from that movement?

It’s something that is always changing - at the moment I am loving the work of Cocorrina.

Q: What do you think are some negative and positive aspects of current design trends?

Design trends can be great to play with and they keep design moving and evolving. The downside is that sometimes a client may be fixated on a particular design trend that may not necessarily be the right fit for their product/service and for the longevity of their brand.
